WTF is Human Factors
Human Factors is the cognitive side of diving that is often neglected during courses and in real world diving. Working to develop situational awareness, clear communication, stress management and honest debriefing increases the chance of a successful, safe and fun dive. Human Factors training helps you think, decide, and communicate under pressure. In short – making it easier to do the right thing and harder to do the wrong thing.
Essentials
Essentials is The Human Diver’s online course that introduces some of the principles that you can introduce to your own diving. It looks at why even experienced divers and teams still make simple mistakes by bringing proven tools from mission-critical fields into diving. Applied Skills
Human Factors in Diving: Applied Skills is a two day immersive and interactive class that will improve your situation awareness, decision making, communications, leadership and teamwork. We use a series of complex missions within a space-based scenario to bring out practical lessons within a controlled (yet surprisingly stressful!) environment. Although diving focussed, over 90% of the content is applicable to all areas of human activity, and we use examples from high performing teams in healthcare, aviation, Formula 1, the oil and gas industry, wing suit flying and others. The class also includes over $200 worth of “goodies”, including a set of wetnotes, the online HFiD: Essentials class and a copy of “Under Pressure”.
Learning From Emergent Outcomes
Learning From Emergent Outcomes is a new way to look at event and accident analysis for all divers. It is especially applicable in the cave and technical community, where accident analysis often takes place but frequently does not progress beyond “what went wrong?” or “who touched it last?”. LFEO asks a more useful question: how did this outcome emerge from the system as a whole? The two day class includes some of the background theory alongside detailed analysis of real diving incidents and creation of learning products.
